The “Slow file open dialogue box” issue in Mavericks is a very minor issue but for those that bugged by it, and have a tiny bit of technical skill, the fix is unexpectedly simple. The problem is simply that when you save a document the “File Dialog” box that opens will not show any files or directories for up to ten seconds. While this is not a disaster and its very likely that Apple will get it fixed in a future OS update, there are a few folk out there that are crying for a fix. The fix is a simple edit of one OS file so that when you save a document, your system will not scan the network looking for file servers. Thats all thats happening and it seems very likely that Apple will return the standard behavior to the pre-Mavericks behavior.
If you are one of those that can’t wait, here is technique to avoid the delay while waiting for your system to scan for network file servers. Its up to you to decide if taking the risk of customizing your system is worth it to gain several seconds while manually saving a file to a new location.
Slow file open dialogue box in Mavericks workaround:1
a) In the Finder use the GO menu and select Go to Folder
b) Type ‘/etc’ ( without single quotes ) in the Go to folder dialog box and press the Go button
c) Right ( Control ) click the auto_master file in the resulting Finder window. Select “Open with….” and use TextWrangler ( your choice )
d) Comment out the line by inserting a ‘#’ ( pound sign ) as noted in Snaggletooth_DE’s instructions In this file comment out /net with # (#/net …)
e) Save the file ( probably need to authenticate with your admin password )
f) Do the ‘sudo automount -vc’ per Snaggletooth_DE’s instructions. Will need to authenticate again.
I personally tried this on my system and it worked perfectly, the slow file open dialog box problem completely disappeared and my system returned to its former super fast self. As always consider this type of customization risky to your data. Try it at your own risk.
